Herb Ritts

Herb Ritts was born in Los Angeles in 1952. His family owned a furniture business and, after graduating in economics, he took over management of the firm. During that time he also began to take photographs. Among his first was a series of photographs of Richard Gere, taken a a petrol station in the desert, two years before Gere made American Gigolo. The year was 1978, and when the photographs arrived in the desk of the offices of US Vogue, Ritt's impressive career was launched, a career that has included taking pictures for Harper's Bazaar, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair, among others, He is also well known for his advertising campaigns for Versace, Armani, Chanel, Calvin Klein, Gap, Valentino, Levi's and Pirelli. Ritts died in 2002.
